We've been deep in research and development this winter, digging into the world of the extraordinary first chorus of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon.
The choruses in ancient Greek theatre wove together song, movement and text in a way that is rarely, if ever, attempted in modern productions. But those who saw the choruses performed live in ancient Athens described these scenes as an ‘overwhelming torrent of sensory impressions.’ We're incredibly lucky to be working with ancient Greek specialist, Dr Michael Carroll from the School of Classics at the University of St Andrews, to investigate ancient Greek and English text, rhythm, song, movement and dance to begin to recover that power.
Also joining us in the room for the first stage of work are our two Theatre Maker Placements, Emma Lynne Harley and Rebecca Dunn, and designers Katharine Williams and Alisa Kalyanova.
We'll be working on this throughout the year, with more development time and work sharings to come!
